👋 Hi! I’m Sam, a.k.a. The Fairfax Curator

Sam is an Artist, Writer, Gamer and Blogger who has been creating content around chronic disability for like, a really long time.

Medically retired from educative library work and teaching in April 2023, but with private creative works still accessible and a suddenly dodgy memory, somewhere was needed for Sam to keep everything, and carry on sharing it with the student community. It’s changed a few times, but basically, this is Sam’s safe deposit box.

May something one day be useful.

I've been a crafter and recycler all my life. I grew up contributing to home grown vegetables and home sewn clothes, cross stitch in the evening for sewing practice, woodwork and repairs in the garden shed, and creation and art without the word ever being attached.

It seemed a very small step for me to begin my BSc in Natural and Human Environments; even on my first BSc piece, I could not understand the point of producing something that would not continue to be useful to a research community. I therefore created the Iron Age database accessible below. I worked after that in the politico-sociological side of human environments, helping fight for better conditions for long term unemployed, improved employability and better conditions for impoverished areas, but I also remained a keen hiker, traveled most of the UK and some of the world, and was a dedicated outdoor gardener for the next 25 years. I never stopped learning, and was always active somewhere in the adult education system. I always felt the need to write and create.

My career developed into self-employed teaching and then mainstream education. I completed my MA in Literature and Digital Cultures and as a keen gamer, I focused my study on fairy tale game narratives, beginning to show elements of these in my artwork.

I was born with a rare blood disorder, which deteriorated into auto immune conditions as I aged. As I began selling my watercolour prints, I began developing comorbidities that forced me into early retirement in 2023; my mainstream teaching career and lifelong education were now over. The Fairfax Curator began in 2018, with Sam's Plants beginning around 2022.
